Lester Dunton first became involved with Process projection when asked to sychronize the then new Moviecam SL to a Mitchell process projector on Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut" under the auspices of the legendary Charles Staffell.
Since then Lester has gone on to provide many projection services to a wide range of productions.
We shoot the plates in one of our specialised rigs and vehicles, and stabilise and pre-grade the plates before bringing to set. We can also assist in the procurement of vintage plates, before processing and appropriately modifying them.
The devil is in the details - that is why we combine the back projection image together with separate projections designed to appear in reflective surfaces (eg. windscreen) and our innovative reactive lighting system - synchronised with the background image, aimed at completely immersing the scene into reality. That means begone generic pre-set lighting effects!
On the day we run the projection via our onset playback system, which allows for image reposition, cutting, and grading to camera - meaning we can immediately make any change you need on the fly.
There isn’t any - all done! No need to worry about the green screen, VFX, everything is already in the can.
Projection technology is now at a stage where we can provide a cost effective replacement to translites and green screens, with the advantage of being in-camera.
We currently hold the World Record for biggest projection in a film, having provided 20 x 10 meter screens for Scott Free production "Equals" in Singapore for a CG city view outside a highly reflective apartment set. We have recently created period Paris for "The Collection". We have also transformed a bar in Cardiff, Wales to 1950 New York, using mapped plasma screens outside the windows, playing period plates. This required minimal blackout, and minimal invasion on the sidewalk outside. Productions include Harry Potter Whomping Willow water movement, Equals, The Collection, and Poet in New York, and Broadchurch.
We can provide period or modified projectors and cameras for on screen use from our own collection, or our many contacts, most recently having done so in The King’s Man (2020). We also have a section of semi silver mirror rigs. We can modify and manufacture custom equipment and modifications in our CNC equipped machine shop.
Productions include "Inglorious Basterds" - screen burning sequence, "Hugo Cabret" - many modified projectors and lighting effect, "Angelas Ashes"- vintage cinema, "Before I Go To Sleep" - micro projection into Nicole Kidmans eye.. "Maleficent" - frame accurate motion controlled lighting effects, and many TV productions.
But… If you have something else in mind feel free to reach out to us! We like to think that we technically imaginative, and can come up with many projection ideas for unusual effects and uses.
Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any further questions!
